Factors to Consider when Purchasing a Fly Fishing Reel When I first got into fly fishing someone told me that if I was going to go cheap on any item of my fishing equipment that it should be my reel. "The reel is simply used to store the line" I was told and since I was a beginner fisherman I didn't know any better. Nothing could be further from the truth. A good reel is absolutely crucial in terms of handling large fish. If you don't have a good reel than big fish will break your line or slip the hook. Here are some factors to consider when purchasing a fly fishing reel: 1. Make sure that you can easily adjust the drag to very precise settings. How tight you set the drag depends on a variety of factors, most importantly your tippet strength and the types of flies that you are using. You need to vary the tightness of your drag precisely based on tippet strength. Your goal is to set the drag tight enough that a running fish will tire out, but loose enough that the fish won't snap the line. 2. Make sure that the drag is exceptionally smooth. Cheap reels are very unsmooth. The tension that is applied to a running fish will vary and the line can tend to get slightly caught on a running fish. It is so difficult to battle a large strong fish on a cheap reel. The odds of you landing the fish are low. You want a silky smooth drag. 3. Make sure that the reel is light weight. The proper way to handle a fish to make sure that the fish does not slip the hook is to hold the rod high above your head. If your reel is too heavy your arm will get tired after batting many big fish. A light reel goes a long way. My recommendation for a good reel... it doesn't get much better than the Sage 2500 Series Drag Fly Fishing Reel.
