Kayak Fishing

For many years my brother and I would get up at the crack of dawn, keen as mustard to get out on the rocks and throw a line into the water for a bit of sport with, hopefully the biggest fish just waiting to do battle with us. Mostly it was fun and to be honest, I didn't mind if I caught something or not. It was just great to be out there freezing my butt off waiting for the sun to get up and put some warmth into my bones.

The truth is, So many people were thinking the same and it got harder and harder to get our favorite spots first. Of course with more and more people the fish close to the shore became scarce and our interest waned.

We decided to buy a boat and get out to where the big ones dwelled. So off we went to the Boat Shop. We found the perfect boat and very nearly bought it until I spied in the far corner of the shop a Fishing Kayak. I got to thinking that although a boat would be great, there was maintenance on the engine to be done not to mention the increasing cost of petrol and where would we launch it.

So, instead we bought two Fishing Kayaks, two buoyancy aids and a roof rack for the car. They even threw in a couple of boat rods. We saved many thousands of dollars with that purchase compared to buying the boat.

We headed straight to the water. Advantage one: You don't need to find boat ramp, just find a spot you like and take the Kayak off the roof of the car, down to the waters edge and you're ready to go. We paddled out a few hundred meters, dropped the lines over the side and began fishing. Within minutes we were pulling fish in. Its been the same every time since. Great fishing with exercise thrown in for free. What could be better?

What I have learned about Kayak Fishing: Be organized, place things around the kayak that are within arms reach. Once seated and out on the water its not so easy to move around. Take a bottle of water with you. I know it seems obvious but you'd be amazed how many people overlook this one.

Take a cooler with you. You'll be catching more fish and they need to be kept cool until you get them home.

The most important modification I have done to my kayak is to install an anchor system. Wind and water currents will move you off that good spot so quick and you wont realize until you're not getting any bites and you look up to see you're a long way from that spot. A good fishfinder such as the Hawkeye Portable Handheld Fish Finder and a good depth finder such as the Hawkeye Portable Handheld Depth Finder and Temperature Reader will be helpful in terms of finding fish and staying on them.

When we get the kayaks home we just hose them down and put them away. A whole lot better than a motorized boat. Basically, we are fishing for free and having more fun on the water than ever before. We have even started our own lures continuing with our cost efficient fishing. Magic! Here's another guy's blog who agrees with me that kayak fishing is better than a boat any day
