Spotted Bass and Largemouth Bass Fishing in Georgia

Georgia offers some great fishing for largemouth and spotted bass. Largemouth are the more popularly pursued species, however, spotted bass are a great sportfish as well.

An average size spotted bass weighs about a pound. A four pound spotted bass is considered a trophy fish. In Georgia the spotted bass inhabits deep and clear water. Four pound fish are around, however, they are not common.

Spotted bass are strong fighters, and many anglers feel that spots are the most spirited black bass species. Although spotted bass do not grow as big as largemouth bass and are not as acrobatic as smallmouths, a good spotted bass on the end of the line gives you a fight to remember.

Lake Lanier is probably the best spotted bass fishing lake in Georgia. In 1985, an 8 pound, ½ ounce spotted bass was caught here. Most of the spotted bass are a lot smaller on Lanier though. You can get away with light tackle - try an Abu Garcia Cardinal 100 Reel.

Spotted bass are common in central and northern Georgia in areas around the Coosa, Chattahoochee and Savannah River systems.

Lake Jackson is another good Georgia spotted bass fishing lake. Spots currently make up about 25 percent of the black bass population in Lake Jackson. Biologists found the first spotted bass in the lake in 1998, so their population has increased very quickly. Spotted bass here average 9 to 10 inches in length. About 15 percent of the spotted bass in the lake are more than 15 inches long.

At first glance, spotted bass are almost impossible to differentiate from largemouth bass. Spotted bass usually have a sandpaper-like tooth patch on the tongue, which largemouth lack. Also, the rear of the jaw does not extend behind the eye as it does in largemouths. Lastly, the spiny and soft dorsal fins are connected with a shallow notch that does not reach all the way to the body.

Largemouth bass in Jackson typically weigh between ¾ pound and 1 pound. Almost half of the bass in Lake Jackson are more than 15 inches long. While the real giants are less common than they once were, the population is well balanced and fish occur in a large range of different sizes. A good reel for largemouth bass fishing is the Abu Garcia Revo STX. A good fishing lure to try is the Kicktail XL5 Shad Lure.

Lake Jackson is one of the oldest reservoirs in Georgia. Many trophy bass are caught here each year. Over the years, the lake has produced countless double-digit largemouths. The current Lake Jackson largemouth bass record is 14 pounds, 7 ounces.

Georgia has a lot to offer in terms of bass fishing. Good luck to you in your future fishing adventures.
