Peacock Bass Fishing Peacock bass fishing offers a fun and interesting challenge. The peacock bass is actually a member of the cichlid family and not the bass family, though it resembles of a colorful largemouth bass. The peacock bass is very beautiful and is vibrantly colored with various shades of green, blue, orange and gold. Despite their pretty appearance they are actually ferocious fighters and brilliant gamefish. The peacock bass is actually categorized into four distinct species: (a) the speckled peacock, (b) the peacock pavon or tucunare, (c) the butterfly peacock, and (d) the royal peacock. The peacock bass may have acquired its name from the fact that the fish has a black circular "eye spot" which is notably rimmed in gold on the base of the caudal fin, which resembles the tail plume of a peacock fowl.
