Smallmouth Bass Tips For Fishing Lake Erie Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes, has some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the United States. Many fishermen report catching 50 fish over a weekend – with the average sized fish being four pounds! There is an incredible density of large, beautiful smallmouth bass. The reason that Lake Erie is so good for smallmouth bass fishing is because of the great habitat, abundance of prey and low fishing pressure (for its size). If you're fishing Erie you need to be mindful of the weather because it can change in a hurry. A bright sunny day can turn into a fierce storm with forceful winds in a hurry. A fishfinder that can import weather data such as the Lowrance HDS Fish Finder is invaluable. Lake Erie offers great fishing for other species as well such as the yellow perch, walleye, northern pike and white bass. If you are keeping fish than make sure to pay attention to the regulations so that you aren't pulling fish out of the lake illegally. A good spot to go fishing for smallmouth is at Long Point Bay. At the end of June, smallmouth swim through the bay as they travel back to the mail lake after the spawn. Presque Island is another good spot for deep water jigging. Presque Isle Bay has calm water and good fishing for a number of different species.
