Stanley Jigs Wedge Plus Spinnerbait Review - Great For Fall Bass Fishing

Author:
Chuck Elliott

The fall fishing season is often when bass fishing is at its best. Hunters are in their stands and us dedicated fisher people usually have the best fishing of the year to ourselves! Fast moving, shad imitating lures get the nod this time of year, as bass are often found shallow feeding on schools of bait that have been drawn to creeks and coves by the seasonal cooling of the water.

An awful lot of bass fishermen are throwing crankbaits and jerkbaits this time of year. And that's ok. They catch fish! But for me, Fall means one thing to me: Big bass spinerbait action! Over my years of fishing experience I have learned that the smaller profile lures, such as crankbaits, catch plenty of fish in the fall. But if you are willing to use a lure with a larger profile, and forgo the smaller fish, you can catch some GIANT bass this time of year!

The lure I choose for fall fishing is not by accident, it's a calculated choice based on lure qualities, and the tendencies of bass that are feeding aggressively on bait fish. I want a lure with a large profile, lots of flash, and lots of vibration. The spinnerbait is an obvious choice for these qualities. But certain spinnerbaits are better suited to fall fishing than others are.

First of all, I want a spinnerbait that has double willow leaf blades. The double willow leaf blades allow you to reel your bait in faster, while still keeping it well below the surface. The fast moving action of the bait is key to triggering strikes from fish that are keying on fast moving baitfish.

Next, I want a fishing bait that is realistic looking. Often in the Fall, especially the early fall, the water in your favorite lakes will be clearer than any other time of the year due to water filtration by weeds and grass in the lake, as well as lack of summer rains. I want my spinnerbait to have a natural looking skirt pattern, and a realistically painted head that matches the skirt. The bass can see better in clear water, and you don't want that bass of a lifetime shying away from your lure because it looked unnatural.

The last factor I look at when choosing a spinnerbait is the quality of the components. Again, when you hook up with that monster fall time bass, you want to make sure your bait is stout enough to put him in the boat! A large needlepoint hook is essential, as well as a quality ball bearing swivel.

As I describe this "Ultimate Fall Lure" one bait comes to mind. The Stanley Jigs Wedge Plus Spinnerbait:

It is spinnerbait that has been developed from previous models of Stanley Spinnerbaits. The Wedge Plus has double willow leaf blades, a great selection of skirt colors with matching painted heads, a super sharp needle point hook, a quality ball bearing swivel, and the frame of the bait is made from quality stainless steel wire. This is THE big bass lure for the fall fishing season!

If it sounds like I'm in love with this bait, its because I am! I have been using Stanley Spinnerbaits since I started fishing, and they have just gotten better and better over the years. Try out the Stanley Wedge Plus, you'll be pleasantly surprised by this quality spinnerbait. You can conveniently order the bait online at www.BassPro.com.

Chuck's Tips for the Stanley Wedge Plus:

When fishing in cooling weather in the fall, use a fast retrieve with a low rod tip. Continue the retrieve all the way back to the boat or the bank, often the fish will chase the lure then kill it at the last second.

Don't be afraid to cast the Wedge Plus into heavy cover. It's a surprisingly weedless lure!

Use a trailer hook like the Gamakatsu Spinnerbait Trailer Hook, it will increase your catch percentages on those short striking fish.

The Stanley Wedge is a great all around spinnerbait, and will catch fish year round, although I have outlined it as a fall bait, it is also excellent in the springtime. Just use a slower retrieve with a your rod tip held high, it'll catch some lunker bass!

Chuck's Tips:

If you see a bass following your spinnerbait, dip the rod tip toward the bait, then snap it back. This will often trigger a reaction strike.
