Fishing Wader Reviews - Simms G4 GORE-TEX Waders Review

I recently got my hands on the new Simms G4 Zippered Stockingfoot Waders. There was no way that I was going to pay close to $700 for anything related to fly fishing, but these were a gift, so I was able to try them out without any guilt regarding the price.

Simms G4 Zippered Stockingfoot Waders

For the last nine years, I was a full-time fly fishing guide on the White River in Arkansas' Ozark Mountain Region. Simms waders are considered the best-in-the-business due to their reliability, durability and all-around comfort. There are very few guides I know of that wear anything but Simms waders, and I used the older Guide Waders from Simms for the last five years of my guiding career.

It was an exciting prospect to try out the G4 GORE-TEX waders as I experienced such great success with the Guide Waders. Over the course of five years, I put those waders through the ringer, as guides are notoriously hard on their gear. When I did have an issue due to wear and tear, Simms was great about offering me several repair and replacement options.

The G4's saw their inaugural use on eastern Oregon's Owyhee River outside of Boise, Idaho. Considering the price of these waders, I all but expected them to catch the trout for me. They didn't do that, but the new features and accessories on these waders made them a joy to wear, and at times, I had to remind myself that I was even wearing waders. They go on easily and I have come to appreciate GORE-TEX waders in general because of the durability, breathability and year-round comfort that this material provides.

Perhaps the most innovative feature of the Simms G4 GORE-TEX waders is a front zipper that allows a man "easy access" when the inevitable times come where one must relieve themselves. Those who find themselves in waders a lot have been clamoring for such a system for years. I am also a big fan of the chest pockets that are big enough for a few fly boxes and essential tackle. This feature allowed me to fish all day on familiar waters without a vest or pack of any kind - that is a liberating feeling. The hand-warmer pockets and built-in clips are nice, but not necessary.

All in all, I would say that I was very impressed with the Simms G4 GORE-TEX waders. As long as they hold up as well as older models of Simms waders, I will be satisfied. I wouldn't recommend this product to weekend anglers or those that do not get out on the water but a couple times of year because there are plenty of lower-priced options from Simms and other manufacturers that are more than adequate.

For those guys that have to have the best of everything, make their living on the river, or are fanatical fly anglers, the G4 waders are the cream-of-the-crop and they are sure to prove themselves year in and year out. The $700 price-tag is a bit over-the-top, but again, if you are on the water a lot and you want to avoid the hassle of replacing your waders every year or so, the Simms G4 GORE-TEX waders will not disappoint.
