Simms In Vest Waterproof Windbreaker Jackets Review When you fly fish in Colorado during the summer, there are two things that you can count on: crowds and afternoon thunderstorms. This does not bode well for anglers in search of solitude because of the fact that the further off the beaten path one goes, the more likely they are to get caught in a gully-washer. Like most everyone, my time on the water is limited, and I do not want to continually race other people to the good spots - finding room to be alone is my number-one priority. The Colorado mountain thunderstorms that form in the middle of the day are isolated events, so it is possible to get lucky and never see a drop, although you will hear rumblings of thunder nearby virtually every day in July and August. For this reason, I hate carrying a cumbersome jacket with me when I go on my two to three-mile hikes - if it doesn't rain, I feel stupid. Still, there was also the one time when it poured for five minutes, I got soaked, and then I was too cold to continue fishing, so being unprepared burned me. Whenever I get out on a mountain river in the summer, I always go back and forth on whether or not to bring my jacket. I was at a Denver fly shop gearing up for an upcoming outing to a gold medal trout stream, so I took the chance to explain my dilemma with the pop-up storms to the guy working there. He suggested that I check out this new jacket from Simms that fits in your vest. I explained to him that I did not want another flimsy piece of outerwear that fails me at a critical time. He assured me that this gear would keep me comfortable and dry, and the fabric is 100% breathable. For $100, I thought I would check it out. The Simms name is synonymous with quality, but this jacket is one of their lower priced items. After getting to the river, I spent an hour hiking, and like clockwork, the skies got dark. The Simms In-Vest jacket did live up to its promise to fit easily into a vest, but it looked like I was going to find out really quickly how good of a piece of equipment this really is. After finding an undercut bank, I hunkered down, but the wind was blowing and I was getting rained on. Suffice to say, the jacket did its job, and I'm thrilled to have a way to stay dry, without having to lug a bulky jacket around. The breathable fabric did shield me from the wind throughout the deluge, and I forgot I had the jacket on for a little while after the rain stopped. For $100, the Simms In-Vest waterproof windbreaker should be in every fly angler's vest. A good place to buy the Simms Jacket online is Riverbum.com.
