White River Fly Shop 270 Rod and Reel

When I first started fly fishing fifteen years ago, there were two choices when it came to gear: high-end and crap. The mid-priced fly fishing product market was still in its infancy. This all changed when Bass Pro Shops became a huge national retailer, as they immediately displayed a commitment to producing decent-quality, in-house fly fishing gear.

The White River Fly Shop brand has evolved over time, but it has always had the reputation for quality, at an affordable price. In recent years, Bass Pro Shops has stepped up the White River Fly Shop product line, and now savvy anglers have the opportunity to purchase gear that is virtually identical to top of the line products, for a very reasonable price.

About a year ago I was searching for a decent rig for tackling some large, Western rivers during the summer. This was my first attempt at closely matching my gear with specific fishing conditions. I came across the White River Fly Shop 270 rod and reel outfit by Bass Pro Shops, and I was instantly intrigued at the possibility of saving a boatload of cash. It turns out that the 270 line of rods and reels are designed to reduce the fatigue that accompanies the tough fishing techniques necessary on large, moving waterways. These outfits are perfect for heavy-water nymph fishing and chucking streamers, but they are sensitive enough to softly present small dry flies - if the wind ever lies down.

I usually stay away from purchasing complete fly fishing outfits, but I figured that I was going to save over $500 off of the price of a mix and match, high-end setup. For $329, I got both the rod and the reel, along with a surprisingly good fly line. I was giddy over the fact that I would have extra money for another guided fishing day, but I started feeling remorse as my trip approached - what if the 270 rod and reel is too good to be true?

Luckily for me, the White River Fly Shop 270 rod and reel combo proved to be a more than effective tool for fly fishing on bigger rivers. I had the chance to try a buddy's $900 setup for a few hours, and honestly, the 270 rod and reel felt exactly the same. Saving money is always nice, but finding a true deal on a reliable and quality piece of equipment is really sweet. You can buy the combo online at Bass Pro Shops.
