Should you fish with live bait or artificial lures?

Both live bait and artificial bait have a number of advantages and disadvantages. More advanced fishermen typically use artificial bait. However, in many situations live bait may be most effective. Live bait is great for ice fishing, fishing for large musky and bottom fishing in saltwater.

Here are some of the pros of using live fishing bait:

• Live bait is easy to use. Live bait is often the best choice for children. A fisherman does not need to give the bait action.
• Live bait can be easier to present effectively in deep water.
• Live bait will often catch you a wider diversity of species. For example, if you are fishing a topwater popper in Texas you are probably just going to catch largemouth bass. However, if you fish a minnow you might catch crappie, catfish, gar and other interesting fish species. Pretty much any gamefish will eat a minnow or a worm.

Some disadvantages of fishing with live bait:

• Minnows can be difficult to keep alive for long periods of time.
• Live bait can be more expensive, especially if you find yourself investing in products such as aerators, livewell timers and livewell additives.
• Fish are more likely to swallow the hook.
• Not as much skill is required, so the fishing may not be as exciting.

Here are some pros of fishing with artificial baits and lures:
• More skill is required which can lead to a greater sense of achievement.
• Can be fished in a wide variety of presentations, such as topwater and weedless (with a plastic worm Texas or Carolina rigged).
• The same bait/ lure can be used to catch many fish. After catching a fish with live bait you will likely have to get new bait.
• Usually better for catch and release fishing, in terms of minimizing stress and harm to the fish.

Some cons of fishing fish artificial baits:
• Tougher to master
• Tougher to find the exact right lure or fly for the situation (most any fish will hit a minnow or a worm)
• Can be less fun and more difficult for children
• Less diversity in fish species that you catch
