What is the best live bait for saltwater fishing? Of course, the best bait depends on how and where you are fishing, as well as the species that you are pursuing. Here is some analysis on some popular saltwater live fishing baits: Finger mullet - Four to six inch finger mullet makes a fantastic saltwater fishing bait. Finger mullet are an effective bait if fished dead or alive and most fish species will aggressively hit finger mullet. Pogies - These shad are an excellent fishing bait. Pinfish - Pinfish are a very hardy live bait that is extremely effective and popular in Florida. Fiddler crabs - Fiddler crabs can be an effective bait to catch drum and sheephead. These fiddler crabs can effectively fished right up against the pylons of piers and docks. Sand crabs - Sand crabs are very effective for surf fishing on the west coast of the United States. Ghost Shrimp - Ghost shrimp are another very popular surf fishing bait in California and in other areas on the Pacific Ocean. Sardines - Sardines are a very popular and effective live bait. Sardines are one of my favorite deep sea fishing baits. You can catch anything from a one pound sand bass to a 200 pound marlin on sardines. Most saltwater fish species will vigorously attach a properly presented sardine. Anchovies - There are times when fish are keyed in on feeding on anchovy and you will have a difficult time catching them on any other bait. Squid - Squid can be an effective bait. However, oftentimes the fish are feeding on something else and fishermen won't have much luck fishing with squid.
