Learn Tips and Techniques for Catching Trophy Largemouth Bass

The largemouth bass is one of the most popularly pursued species of fish by anglers in the entire world. Largemouth bass can grow larger than 20 pounds (a 22 pound 5 ounce record bass was recently taken from Lake Biwa, Japan) and are known for being feisty fighters and taking a wide variety of fishing baits and lures. Popular bass fishing methods include fishing with plastic worms, lizards, tubes, spinnerbaits, jigs, crankbaits and live bait. The most effective bait and method varies greatly by location, season, time of day and many other factors.

By far the easiest time of year to catch largemouth bass is in the spring during the spawn. The timing of the spawn varies according to your location. The further south you are, the earlier the spawn will occur. During the spawn the bass most aggressively protect their nests and will pick up a variety of baits. The bass commonly nest close to the shoreline and dragging a large plastic lure along the bottom will often trigger tremendous action. My personal favorite spawn bass fishing technique is to drag a green bleeding tube through shallow coves. I would recommend the Bass Pro Double Dipped Bleeding Bass Tubes. The bass go nuts. Wait for the bass to pick it up firmly and then set the hook.

As the weather gets warmer in late spring and early summer, the bass will rise for topwater lures. Fishing topwater can be especially fun and very productive. The most productive times of day to fish topwater are at sunrise and sunset. Vary the action that you give to your topwater lures; sometimes just let it sit there, twitch it, jerk it, etc.

If the water is very warm or very cold, such as in the heat of summer or the cold of winter, you will want to fish deeper, slower baits such as jigs and plastic worms. When the bass are in deeper water a fish finder can be very helpful to find the bass. I recommend the Norcross Hawkeye Portable Fish Finder. A depth reader such as the HawkEye Handheld Portable Depth Guage is very helpful out on the water too.
