There is one major thing to keep in mind when you are fly fishing for trout... Don't set the hook too hard!!! The last time that I was fly fishing the San Juan there was this guy who otherwise looked like he might be a pretty good fisherman but just didn't have a clue about how to set the hook. Every time that the strike indicator went went under he would snap the rod back with such ferocity that he just jerked the tiny fly right out of the trout's mouth. He would have caught a ton more fish if he would have just been more gentle. I kindly let him know what he was doing incorrectly but he just blew me off. To each his own I guess. I have seen so many anglers that jerk the hook completely out of the fish's mouth or break their line. I think that people who grew up fishing for largemouth bass are used to a hard hook set and just don't realize that fly fishing for trout is a whole different game. Trout have soft, fleshy mouths, and you are often fly fishing with small flies and light tippet, so all you need to do is just gently lift the rod tip. The proper technique when you see a strike is to gently (but quickly) lift your rod tip while at the same time quickly pulling the line down with your non-casting hand. Once you get the hang of this you will land so many more fish that hit your fly. Improper hook setting is one of the most common mistakes that people make fly fishing. The key is to be quick... but gentle.
