The setup that I use fly fishing in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico is simple and pretty much always effective. I use a short rod, 7.5 or 8.5 feet. A 3 weight is ideal (try the Sage Launch 7.5 foot 3 weight fly rod). I use a 7.5 foot 5x leader. I use two flies in a dry dropper setup, which is great for fly fishing small mountain streams. The top fly that I use is a high floating stimulator. Tie some 6x tippet around the hook of the stimulator and 15 inches down tie on a size 12 or 14 hare's ear. Grease up the stimulator really well, which will serve as your strike indicator. When the stimulator goes under set the hook. During most times of year you should get quite a few strikes on the stimulator as well. To learn more about how to select the right fly check out this article. This setup is deadly when fly fishing almost any small mountain small stream in New Mexico. I have fly fished this dry dropper setup all over New Mexico and southern Colorado and have had tremendous success. When fly fishing larger rivers in the area such as the San Juan other techniques should be used. Of course, if you don't fish it right, you won't catch much. You need to understand where the trout hold and how to properly present your flies in that spot. Always fish the edges of where fast water meets slow water, as well as any swirled water and deep holes. Always let your flies float naturally with the current. The water up in the mountains can be cold so I would recommend getting a good pair of waders such as the William Joseph V2 Flyfishing Waders. I would also recommend that you have a good pair of fishing sunglasses to spot fish such as the Smith Hudson Polarized Fly Fishing Sunglasses. A nice place to camp in the Jemez Mountains is near Fenton Lake. I just set up my Marmot Aeros 3P Tent and camp and fish and have a blast.
