Fly Fishing At Night!

If you have never tried night fishing you are missing out. It is a huge rush and you can often catch some monster trout. It's actually easier for beginners to catch fish night fishing than during the day on some rivers. Plus, you have the river all to yourself!

Here's what you do: get yourself a headlamp and head out to a deep hole or cut where you know fish hold. Tie on a heavily weighted wooly bugger with a couple split shots a foot above it. Use pretty thick tippet, as the fish hit hard. 5x or 6x tippet won't cut it... go thicker.

Cast your fly out into the cut in the hole and let the current take your line out a bit. Then slowly creep your wooly bugger across the bottom. Thoroughly work the cut as well as the slower water to the side of the cut and closer to the bank. The is my favorite way to fish the Texas Hole on the San Juan River

This is one of the most fun ways to fly fish and often you can catch some huge trout. It is very exhilarating to be out in the river at night feel the tug of a 20+ inch rainbow as you drag your wooly bugger across the bottom. The last time I went night fishing I weighed a fish on my Hawkeye Laser Digital Fishing Scale and it was close to five pounds. You'll need a reel with good drag to catch a fish like this - I recommend the Sage 2500 Drag Fly Fishing Reel.

It sure can get cold fishing high elevation rivers at night though so make sure you have a good pair of warm fishing waders - I recommend William Joseph V2 Fly Fishing Waders.
