Why The San Juan River Has The Best Fly Fishing In The United States
The San Juan River below Navajo Dam of northwest New Mexico is one of the greatest fly fishing rivers in the world, and my own personal favorite river to fly fish. Here's why:
For one, the fish are huge. The average fish on the San Juan River is probably about 16 or 17 inches long. I have been on many fly fishing trips all over the United States where the biggest fish that I caught was 16 or 17 inches! That's got to tell you something. Fish over 20 inches are common on the San Juan and you have a chance to catch something even a lot bigger than that. There are some true monster trout in the San Juan River I can assure you.
The fish on the San Juan are also extremely abundant. If you have done a lot of fly fishing in other rivers and then hit up the San Juan for the first time you will be amazed. There are far more big fish in the San Juan than any other river I have ever been on. Other popular fly fishing rivers in the US are a fraction as good as the San Juan. That is right, a fraction. Check it out if you don't believe me.
Another reason why I love the San Juan River is that you can fish it year round. Yep… that's right, take me fly fishing there any day of the year and I can have a blast and catch fish. Often winter temperatures are relatively mild on the San Juan and even if it's cold that won't stop the fish from hitting. Even if your rod is icing up there are ways around that. There are midge hatches on the San Juan year round.
I also like the method of fishing used on the San Juan. Most of the time, you will be fishing size 22 midges and with these size 22's you will often catch 22 inch fish! It's amazing sport. Battling huge fish on tiny flies with 6x tippet is quite a challenge I can assure you.
