San Juan River Fishing Report - Catch and Release Zone Below Navajo Dam Went fishing on the San Juan River in New Mexico in the catch and release water below Navajo Dam. It was raining most of the day, but that didn't stop me from consistently hooking into trout for most of the time that I was there. Plus I had my Bass Pro Shops Gore-tex fishing jacket to keep me dry. I got there in the mid-afternoon and fished until about 8. The rain was actually pretty nice for two reasons: all the other fishermen left the river so I had it all to myself and the rain washed out the worms so fishing San Juan worms was very productive. I love fishing San Juan worms because the fish are just so much easier to land with the larger hook (instead of the size 22 midges that I am usually fishing). Earlier in the afternoon the trout were nailing a zebra midge pretty good. I had a lot of luck in that cut up closest to Navajo dam. Sight fishing was productive in some of the slower water to the side of the cut. My Smith Hudson polarized fishing sun glasses worked great - I was able to spot fish quite easily. Once the rain came I switched over to San Juan worms. I hooked about 20 fish in total. There was very little diversity in size of the fish that I caught. Nothing too big and nothing too small - all were around 14 to 18 inches. I am heading back out there today and will post a report later. I might do some night fly fishing on the river tonight too... we'll see. Happy Fishing! Btw… that trout fishing picture that I attached is from another (more sunny) day.
