Air Rifle Hunting

I know that this site is all about fishing, but there is so much overlap between hunting and fishing that I thought that it would be a good idea to talk about hunting a bit. For many people, fishing and hunting go hand and hand. There's a good chance that if you enjoy one sport that you will enjoy the other. Both take place outdoors. Both utilize specialized equipment. For both sports you are seeking an animal that provides food. For both it is all about the thrill of the hunt or the thrill of the catch. There are very few feelings that can match the elation of gunning down a monster buck or landing a trophy bass.

Hunting is very diverse. There are many different kinds of game that you can pursue, many techniques that can be used and many tools that can be utilized. Some prefer to hunt with a bow and arrow. Most use a gun. Some like to hunt for big game such as bear or elk. Some prefer smaller game such as birds. Deer hunting is very popular. Some people even travel to far off lands such as Africa for the chance to hunt exotic big game that does not inhabit North America. Hunting is truly diverse and offers to many different opportunities and experiences that you will never get bored of the sport.

Another good thing about hunting is that often the hunting season doesn't overlap with the fishing season. This way, you can hunt in the winter for deer and fish in the summer for catfish and bass. This gives you an excuse to get outdoors (and away from the wife!) year round.

If you are going to get into hunting than I would recommend finding a hunter to show you the ropes. Reading books and articles is good, but there is nothing like having someone show you exactly what you need to get, where you need to go, and what you need to do. Many fishermen on this site can relate I am sure. It can be difficult to catch fish in a new area or pursue a new species. There are just so many variables that are involved and so much knowledge that is needed to be successful. An experienced hunter will probably recommend that you check out different kinds of air rifles and find one that will fit the specific type of hunting that you will be doing. You will need a different rifle depending on whether you are pursuing large or small game. You will also need to consider the distance that you will be shooting from. Air rifle hunting is a fun sport to pursue and I definitely recommend it.
