i picked up my new shark rod yesterday out in Seminole... a Seeker Blue 6460xxh. An all S-glass rod that stands at about 6'3 with the aluminum gimball butt and its rated for 50-130lb. today was the day to break it in. I met up with Hbn1321351 at an old family friend's house in Hudson. He lives right on a channel. Just about every inshore fish makes its way through here. Its mostly known for the redfish and snook. We netted up a fat mullet and some big black drum and headed to the skyway for some shark fishing! i forgot my tackle bag at home and had to borrow one of hbn's rigs. he had a rig that Chuck gave him and i wanted to use that one. i had faith in this rig... i know Chuck catches some sharks! Hbn let me get the mullet because we knew it had a better chance of getting a shark and we wanted to see my new rod in action. i floated it out about 150yds and couldnt get my balloon off. screw it... Hbn read that they like to ambush fish from below anyway... so i left the balloon on. after about 10min... we brought out the menhaden oil jug and poked a small pin hole in it. we had a nice chum slick going! not even 5min later... my clicker is singing!!!!!!!! i grab that reel and flip the lever and RUNNNNN while setting the hook like 13 times. no hook up... but the bait was still on. you know what that means... let some line out and just let it sit again. about 3min later... the clicker starts goin off real slow.... like when you get a clump of grass stuck on the line. i walked over to the reel and it started running again! i picked up the rod and the clicker got louder and faster! i looked at the reel not sure if i wanted to flip that lever now. but i did... and i RANNNNNNN! i set the hook another 38 times and FISH ON!!!! i looked up just in time to see a blacktip landing and a huge splash. i adjusted the drag a hair and let him run. when i gotta chance i pumped the rod up and reeled in as fast as possible. thats when i broke off... or so i thought.
nooooo Chuck! how could you!??! non-forged/welded eye hook. oh well... i gotta nice souvenir and i got to see my rod in action. even Hbn was shook up after this event. until next time!
