Default so I\'m new to fishing

ok, so I\'m new to fishing...sort of. everytime i go down to georgia (i live in pittsburgh now) my uncle usually takes us to a small pond and lets us fish, but we catch really nothing but small fish (sun fish, and occasionlly really small bass). since I don\'t have a rod up here, which rod and reel would be good for a beginner?

Hey man,

I would just go with a basic spinning reel and rod with maybe 8 or 10 pound test line that you can pick up at someplace like bass pro shops, academy or even wal mart. This is a pretty versatile setup that you can use for lots of different kinds of fishing.

ok, thanks? well just in case, after doing some research about the fishing in my area, it looks like i\'m going to mainly be fishing trout, and bass. Will the rod work with them

Yeah... i guess it depends on how big the fish are that you\'ll be fishing for and what technique you plan to use. For the big bass I fish for I like to use a really stiff rod so that i can drag plastic worms and tubes along the bottom and set the hook really well. For trout i like to use a smaller more flexible rod for casting out small lures.

Good luck

Thumbs up

I use a medium action berkley rod 6 1/2 to 7 ft long. I had been using a south bend spinning reel with 10 lb test line. That set up works good for bass and trout.

Match your tackle to the size of the fish... if your fishing a small farm pond catching small bluegill.... get one of those long whippie crappy poles.
A 12 foot one should be light enough. Use 4# or 6# test and a small bluegill hook. Light tackle equals lots of fun.

We\'ve started doing a lot of Tenkara fishing lately. It\'s a form of Japanese fly fishing using only the rod, line, and fly.... NO REEL. My 13 foot 6 inch rod weighs only 3.6 oz. I use a 13 foot line (17#test) and 3 foot leader (4# or 5# test). Even the smallest bluegill or trout puts a bend in the rod. It\'s so much fun. When you tie into a 1 to 2 pound bass... you really have your hands full.
Oh, did I mention that only up to 5# test leader is recomended... anything stronger might cause the rod to break. So much fun when yu match the tackle to the size of the fish.
